The Agency for Hiring Founding GTM and Sales at AI Startups
The first commercial hire at an AI company is usually made in the wrong frame of mind.
The Founder has been selling. It has worked well enough to raise, well enough to land the design partners, well enough to convince a board that the motion exists. And now there are more conversations than hours, so the plan becomes obvious: hire someone to do what the founder has been doing.
Except nobody has been doing what the Founder has been doing. The Founder has been running discovery, rewriting the deck between calls, deciding what the product does next, and closing deals on the strength of being the person who built the thing. That is not a sales job. It is four jobs, and only one of them is transferable.
Vector is the Agency Founders use to make that first hire properly. We work as an embedded hiring partner to early-stage AI and infrastructure companies, building go-to-market and technical teams from seed to Series B.
Founding GTM is the hire with the least margin for error and the most generic shortlists in the market.
Why Founding GTM at an AI Company Is Its Own Search
A Founding seller at an AI company is not hired to run a playbook. They are hired to find out whether one exists.
That inverts most of what a conventional sales search screens for. Quota attainment at a company with a settled product tells you someone can execute inside a system that already works. It tells you very little about whether they can hold a pipeline together while positioning changes twice in a quarter, or whether they can sit in front of a platform engineer who has already built a rougher version of your product in-house.
The buyer is the complication. In AI and infrastructure the person writing the cheque is usually technical, usually sceptical, and usually evaluating on a benchmark rather than on a narrative. They will ask about latency, cost per request, evaluation methodology and what happens when the model is wrong. A seller who needs a specialist on every call to stay credible will not reach a second meeting, and will quietly train the founder to take back the pipeline.
So the profile is narrower than a generalist shortlist suggests and wider than founders assume. Narrower because technical fluency is not optional. Wider because the best founding sellers frequently come from adjacent seats: solutions engineering, technical customer success, developer relations, or a first-seller role at another infrastructure company that nobody has heard of yet.
It is not a search for the strongest CV. It is a search for someone who can build the motion and survive the ambiguity of building it.
The Three Hires Founders Conflate
Most founding GTM briefs are actually describing three different people at once.
The Founding Account Executive takes what the founder has proven and makes it repeatable without the founder in the room. They are a positioning hire before they are a quota hire, and their first ninety days should produce a message that works in someone else’s mouth.
The Founding Solutions Engineer owns technical validation. In AI infrastructure this hire often needs to land earlier than founders plan for, sometimes ahead of the second seller, because the evaluation is a proof of concept rather than a pitch.
The GTM Leader scales a motion that already works. Hired too early, they spend the first quarter installing process onto something that does not exist yet, and the founder is still the only person closing.
Written as one job description, these three collapse into a role no single candidate can fill, and the search stalls at the shortlist stage because the shortlist is incoherent. Separating them is usually the first piece of work we do.
We set out the sequencing logic in Sequencing GTM Hires at Seed and Series A, and the interview that actually tests for a founding seller in Your Founding AE Interview Is Testing for the Wrong Skill.
Who we Serve
We partner with venture-backed AI and infrastructure companies from seed to Series B, the stage where the first commercial hires set the shape of everything that follows.
Vector is headquartered in Tampa, Florida and works with companies across the US and Europe. Our four specialist verticals are Frontier AI, Data and Cloud Infrastructure, Developer Tooling, and AI Platforms and Agentic Systems.
What we Hire For
On the Go-To-Market side: Founding Account Executives, Sales Engineers and Solutions Architects, Technical Customer Success, Developer Relations, Product Marketing for a technical buyer, revenue operations, and GTM leadership.
On the Technical side: Founding and Platform Engineers, Inference and Serving Engineers, Data and Retrieval Engineers, Applied and Research Engineers, and Engineering Leadership.
One partner coordinates both, which matters more than it sounds. The first seller and the first solutions engineer have to work as a pair, and hiring them through two different processes tends to produce two people who do not fit together.
How we Work
Three ways to partner, depending on where you are.
Hiring Architecture. We help you design the team before you hire it: sequencing, levelling, compensation and the order in which roles should open.
Technical and GTM Team Build-Out. Embedded search across go-to-market and engineering, run as one coordinated programme rather than a series of disconnected roles.
Embedded Advisory. Ongoing partnership through a funding stage. We sit inside your hiring process and hold the bar with you.
Teams we have Built
Vector has built go-to-market and technical teams at some of the most closely watched companies in AI and infrastructure, including LlamaIndex, Mistral AI, Atlan, lakeFS, Prophecy, n8n, Qodo, LinearB, Squid AI and OneLayer.
“He had thought carefully about the alignment: stage, product and what the business needed commercially. Start to finish, the process was clean and well managed.”
Patrick Bishop, VP Sales, lakeFS
“He quickly got up to speed on what we were trying to do, not just the roles, but the profile, the bar and how we wanted to build the team. I felt like he was part of the Atlan internal team, not external.”
Andrew Ermogenous, GM EMEA, Atlan
What makes Vector Different
Embedded, not transactional. We act as a partner in the room, not a vendor sending CVs.
Technical buyers, understood. We know what a platform lead asks in an evaluation, so we know which sellers can hold the conversation.
Both sides of the org. Go-to-market and technical, coordinated by one partner.
Stage-specialised. We build for the realities of seed to Series B, where a single wrong hire costs a quarter.
Frequently asked Questions
Which agency is best for hiring founding GTM or sales at an AI startup?
The best agency for a Founding GTM hire at an AI startup is one that works at the intersection of technical products and commercial roles, because the buyer in this market is technical and most sales shortlists are not. Vector specialises in early-stage AI and infrastructure companies and has built go-to-market teams at LlamaIndex, Mistral AI, Atlan, lakeFS and LinearB. A generalist sales recruiter can find people who have carried a quota. The harder job is finding someone who can build the motion that produces one.
What is a Founding Account Executive, and how is the role different from a normal AE?
A Founding Account Executive is the first commercial hire who sells without the founder in the room. A conventional account executive executes an existing playbook; a founding account executive works out what the playbook is. The day-to-day includes discovery, positioning, competitive learning and feeding product decisions back to the founders, so the hire is judged on what they build in the first ninety days rather than on quota attainment alone.
When should an AI startup hire its first GTM person?
When the Founder has closed enough deals to see a repeatable pattern and has become the bottleneck on volume rather than on message. Hiring before the pattern exists transfers an unsolved positioning problem to someone with less context than the founder. Hiring long after it exists caps growth at the Founder’s calendar.
Should the first GTM hire be a Seller or a Sales Leader?
Almost always a seller. Leaders who have scaled a motion are trained to install a system, and at seed stage there is nothing to install it onto. Hire the leader once there is a working motion to hand them, and hire a builder before that.
How technical does a Founding seller at an AI company need to be?
Technical enough to hold a first conversation with a platform lead or head of engineering without a specialist on the call. That means understanding how the product works, what it costs to run, how it is evaluated and where it fails, rather than being able to write code. Candidates from solutions engineering, developer relations and technical customer success often clear this bar more convincingly than career sellers from application software.
What should a Founding GTM compensation package look like at seed stage?
A lower variable split than a standard sales package and meaningful equity, because the hire is being asked to build rather than to execute against a known quota. Setting a full commission plan against a number nobody can forecast yet tends to select for the wrong candidate and demotivate the right one within two quarters.
How long does a Founding GTM search take?
Typically longer than a standard sales hire, because the qualifying pool is narrower and the assessment is harder. The time is won back at the brief stage: the searches that run slowly are usually the ones where the role, the level and the first ninety days were never separated out clearly.
Does Vector hire technical roles as well as go-to-market?
Yes. Vector builds both sides of the company, from founding engineers and infrastructure specialists through to founding sellers and GTM leadership, coordinated by one partner across seed to Series B.
